Hazards
The images and stories of Hurricane Katrina continue to have a profound effect on our national psyche. More importantly, the effects of the 2005 hurricane season continue to be felt locally and nationally as coastal inhabitants, governments and institutions strive to come up with better ways of dealing with the threat of coastal storms. And yet, storms and flooding are only one of the many threats that we deal with on our coastlines. In addition to storms, earthquakes and wild-fires are other natural hazards that must be dealt with in many of our coastal communities. Our participation in how we plan and prepare for these hazards and the actions we take in their aftermath determine the future viability of our coastlines.
